1973 Volkswagen T2B bus blue

The VW bay window bus has reached the status of an evergreen cult classic. Because of their substantial value, many of these busses have been restored, with different intentions and quality levels. Buyer beware, as these charming vehicles have a strong tendency to rust.

If you are in the market for a VW T2 bus, we urge you to take a look at the example we currently have on offer: a 1973 Volkswagen T2B microbus, in factory original two-tone paint, unrestored and super solid. It runs and drives, and would need a service check up, together with some preservation enhancing cosmetic work.

This VW bus came to us from the mild climate of California, where it has been well preserved. Hence, the body structure is about as rust-free as a used T2 can be. The only perforative rust we could find is a small hole in the driver’s side floor panel, and two small sections in the floor below the middle seat mounting plate. Also (what a surprise) the battery tray needs to be replaced.

We gave the factory original paint a professional cleaning and polishing job. At this stage, we would suggest the next owner to go for a preservation class approach: give the paint some colour-matching touch ups, combined with PDS repair of a few dents, repair of the damaged right rear corner and a respray of both rear side cover panels. Opinions on the roof panel may differ; either treat it with a transparent rust sealer, or repaint it in a matching white paint.

All of the dried out window rubbers need to be replaced and the body structure definetely needs a good anti-rust treatment before being used in wet climate conditions.

The interior needs further work: seats and trim panels should be reupholstered and the headliner needs to be replaced. The rear seats have been taken out in the past and are missing. Included is a full set of keys and a sleeve with the factory manual.

Mechanically, the bus makes a good impression. It runs, drives and stops, but would require a thorough check up before being considered roadworthy. The engine is equiped with a recent Weber carburettor, oil is clean and tyres are relatively recent. 93.582 mls on the odometre, assumed to be original miles.

This well-preserved survivor is the perfect canvas for a preservation-class classic.
