1977 Volkswagen Beetle 1600 convertible

This VW 1303 cabriolet was imported from Connecticut, USA as a project car. With a solid body and nicely running engine, it is a perfect base for restoration.

Having left the factory in Mimosa Yellow, the Beetle was painted red some 40 years ago. Now presented in heavily weathered and damaged paint, the car is in need of a complete strip down and bare metal respray.

The chassis and body are remarkably solid, needing only minor patch work and removal of surface rust. The rear valence panel (below the rear bonnet) has suffered from a badly repaired rear end damage, but is easily repairable with a few hours of panel beating and some welding of drilled holes.

More recently, the car was damaged at the convertible top frame, rear bench and the internal panel above the gearbox and rear wheels. This can also be easily repaired, after the engine and gearbox have been taken out. The rear heated window is undamaged, although the metal frame is bent. The wood sections of the convertible top frame need to be replaced and a few bent metal sections can be straightened back in their correct shape.

Housing in the rear is a 1600 injection engine, assumed to be the original power unit. It runs nicely and appears to have been well maintained, with clean oil and relatively new fuel hoses. The car received a new fuel pump, fuel filter and air filter in our workshop.

At present, the car is not driveable. The brakes are disfunctional and the gearshift mechanism needs to be adjusted, as it is only possible to engage second, fourth and reverse gears.

The interior is in original condition and will need to be renovated. The black vinyl shows some light wear on the driver’s side seat. The rear bench is damaged and the lower seating area has been disposed of. The dashboard is in relatively good condition, but will need a few small vinyl repairs. The beetle comes with two keys, the original jack and spare wheel. Current odometre reading is 15.199 mls.

This is a great project for practical enthusiasts and will appeal to both experienced and first time restorers.
