This Mercedes-Benz 300SL is a solid base for a restoration project, with low mileage and a history file with factory booklets.
Built in September 1991, the car was first registered in New Jersey in 1992 and dealer serviced until 1996, when it was sold to California with 57.000 miles. The second owner later relocated to Hawaii, taking the car with him. In 2021, it changed hands to a third owner in Oregon, where it was acquired at auction after being towed for a parking violation. The odometer currently reads 84.578 miles.
Originally finished in bright red with a tan leather interior, the car underwent a “rat look” transformation under its second owner. This included a low-budget matte black repaint, 17-inch AMG wheels, and an AMG rear spoiler. Restoring the vehicle to its factory-original finish will require entirely removing the matte black paint, which has poor adhesion to the underlying red layer.
The body is solid, with no evidence of rust or prior collision damage, though the front bumper needs to be repaired. The VIN report shows no signs of damage history, although the car did receive a salvage title in 2024, because of the reposession process.
Mechanically, the car runs and drives but requires a comprehensive check-up to ensure reliability. Points to address include an aftermarket air filter, dried-out suspension dust covers, and an aftermarket lowering kit for the front springs.
The interior is in need of cosmetic attention and some electrical repairs. Notably, the hardtop and soft-top switch has been removed, along with a few components from the center console, which are included in bags.
A low-priced, low-mileage project car that’s well worth the effort for a dedicated enthusiast or collector ready to bring this iconic R129 back to life.
